Challenge: Let's Write!

Writing helps children understand that print has meaning, and leads to being able to form letters. Complete 3 of the following activities with your pre-reader for 30 points and a badge!

When you complete 3 tasks, you will earn 30 points and a badge.

A paper with crayons and colored pencils scattered with scribbles left by each of them.

Task

Sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star while opening and closing your hands and encourage your pre-reader to do the same…they are building the muscles they will need to hold crayons, markers and pencils.

Offer chalk, crayons, markers or similar items for your child to mark with.

Ask your child about what they are writing. Even if it is scribbling, if they can tell you what they wrote they are understanding that writing represents something with meaning.

Use your fingers to draw lines and shapes in sand, rice, paint or even the air and encourage your pre-reader to do the same.

Try drawing both lines and circles while writing…both are used later when forming letters.
