Edible science: You will need graham crackers and frosting.

The Earth's outermost layer is made up of tectonic plates that shift creating natural disasters like Earthquakes.

Use two graham cracker squares or large cookies to represent tectonic plates. Spread a layer of frosting or whipped cream on a cutting board or flat surface (this semi-molten layer beneath the plates). Place the graham cracker "plates" on top of the frosting layer.

  • Slowly pull the two crackers apart, showing how magma (frosting) rises.
  • Push them together. One might slide under the other (subduction), or both might buckle upwards (mountain building).
  • Slide them past each other horizontally.

This illustrates how the tectonic plates move and what might happen when they do.

Watch this Youtube video and create a homemade Seismograph! (An instrument used to detect and record the physical movements and vibrations the Earth's surface.)
